Selecting the Right Binghamton Eye Surgeon
If you’re looking for an eye surgeon in Binghamton to handle your corneal surgery, lensX cataract surgery or LASIK Vision Correction, here’s an issue you might want to ask about: Complication rates.
Due largely to the fact that neither hospitals nor the government track the post-operative complication rates of individual surgeons, this month the non-profit organization ProPublica released a study of surgeons nationwide that drew some eye-opening conclusions about how to distinguish the good from the not-so-good.
In their story called, “Making the Cut: Why choosing the right surgeon matters even more than you know,” ProPublica reporters established a direct correlation between surgeons with the highest complication rates, and those with the highest rates of patient dissatisfaction. Their deductions were based on complication rates gleaned from a pool of 17,000 surgeons nationwide.
According to ProPublica:
“A small share of doctors, 11 percent, accounted for about 25 percent of the complications. Hundreds of surgeons across the country had rates double and triple the national average. Every day, surgeons with the highest complication rates in our analysis are performing operations in hospitals nationwide.”
